E-Prescribing

Cal-Med now offers a full E-Prescribing (ERx) module, which allows for all the aspects of prescribing, in an electronic format. In partnership with SureScripts, which maintains connections with all the major pharmacies, as well as with First Data Bank, which provides medication, and allergy lists, this module removes the need to hand write prescriptions, and expedites the process for patients to receive their medication. Additionally, Cal-Med's E-Rx is fully integrated with both the EMR software and billing/scheduling software, so there is no need for any manual patient data entry.

Medicare and E-Prescribing Are You Ready?

Many of you know that Medicare has started to mandate E-Prescribing. Under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) of 2008, a five year incentive program was established for eligible professionals to receive payments for Medicare patients they see in their office. Physicians that choose or fail to implement a eRx system by 2011 will face Medicare penalties starting in 2012. Physicians that have an eRx in place by 2011 will be able to apply for the one percent incentive payment based on their total Medicare payments for the year.

Medicare E-Prescribing Deadlines

June 30th, 2011 - Providers must have sent at least 10 E-Prescriptions or Medicare will penalize them 1% of their total Medicare charges in 2012.
November 1st, 2011- Deadline to request a hardship exemption through the QualityNet website under the communications support page.
July 1st, 2011 to December 31st, 2011 - Providers must have sent at least 25 E-Prescriptions to Medicare to receive the 1% invective and not be penalized 1.5% in 2013. (Source: www.ascrs.org)
